Parents:
I received a question regarding math facts during Curriculum Night, but I'm not sure who it is from. I just thought I'd post a response here and see if it helps anyone.
Regarding math facts, competition among students is not avoided. We encourage students to work together on math facts a variety of ways to increase number sense and fluency. Students will play skill and fact practice games in small groups to try to increase fact fluency and will compete against each other in that way. We time students in a way where they can try to beat their own times, too. The only competition we avoid is where students are left out of something if they are having trouble increasing fact recall speed.
I hope that helps.
Oops, that question was from me. I didn't mean for it to be anonymous. I'm glad to hear competition is encouraged inside the classroom as well as outside. Thank you for clarifying.
